RUBBER FLOORING WITH SLIP RESISTANCE
Accidental falls due to slipping represent an important cause for concern and must be taken into consideration when selecting flooring for a facility. Rubber flooring offers excellent slip resistance, which will help to mitigate the risks, particularly in environments with at-risk users, such as in healthcare and education.

What Is a Flooring With Slip Resistance?

Choosing Rubber Flooring With Slip Resistance
There are several factors that can increase the risk of slipping or falling on a floor. This is why installing flooring with slip resistance properties is a wise decision.
One of the main challenges lies in the fact that many elements can make a floor slippery, and conditions often change, making them difficult to manage. Here are some of the factors that can contribute to the risk of slipping:
- The presence of water or moisture on the floor, such as spills or puddles left by customers on rainy days.
- The absence of warning signs after floors have been cleaned.
- The type of footwear worn, which may not always offer slip-resistance properties.
DIN 51130 Standard
The German standard DIN 51130 defines the specifications and characteristics of slip-resistant floor coverings installed in areas where there is a risk of slipping. To verify whether surfaces meet the regulatory requirements, laboratory tests are conducted to measure the slip resistance coefficient (slip resistance rating, or R value) of each product. The higher the R rating, the greater the slip resistance. For example, R13 represents the highest level of slip resistance.

How Do These Tests Determine the Slip Resistance Rating?
The slip resistance rating is determined through a series of tests designed to assess both the anti-slip properties and the floor’s resistance to slipping.
A sample of the flooring material is taken and placed on a machine with an adjustable inclined plane, which is then lubricated with oil. An operator wearing safety shoes walks back and forth on the surface as the angle of inclination gradually increases.
When the person can no longer maintain stability on the surface, the test is considered complete, and the flooring is assigned an R rating that indicates its level of friction and adhesion.
