Introducing GAIA

The next step in our sustainability journey.
GAIA embodies a different sourcing philosophy, based on a working method focused on a new eco-design. Its approach involves replacing certain ingredients with more sustainable alternatives.

By doing so, we can select materials with a lower environmental impact. For several years, Mondo Group has been dedicating its best resources to developing more sustainable materials through the introduction of recycled or renewable components. These efforts enable us to uphold our commitment to the environment and achieve our sustainability goals.

We currently offer the standard GAIA version on our 3 mm Uni and Kayar flooring. Other products can also be produced in the GAIA version upon request.

Why Choose GAIA?

GAIA represents our latest innovation. It’s designed to minimize the GWP (Global Warming Potential) of Mondo products and to give a second life to our byproducts.

On average, GAIA achieves

a 60% reduction

(Compared to the situation before our eco-design intervention)

How Do We Achieve This?

GAIA is built on five main innovations:

1. Bio-attributed Rubber

This is rubber largely made from bio-based oil derived from plants or seeds. Its use allows us to reduce our reliance on non-renewable sources and minimize our environmental impact.

2. Rice Husk-Derived Silica

A byproduct of rice cultivation, rice husks are often treated as waste and discarded. Reusing this renewable material has no impact on the food chain and enables us to significantly reduce the resource-intensive extraction processes typically required to produce silica.

3. Recycled Calcium Carbonate

Sourced from dust residues generated during the processing of Carrara white marble, this material gives a second life to a byproduct while reducing the need for virgin calcium carbonate extraction.

4. Pigment-Free Base Layer

The base layer of our flooring is now free of added pigments. While invisible, this innovation significantly reduces emissions associated with pigments.

5. Waste Recycling

We incorporate various types of internal pre- and post-processed waste into our flooring: raw mixes, trimmings, off-cuts, or raw and cured powders.

A Longstanding Commitment to the Environment

Our rubber flooring is based on Mondo’s unique Dual Durometer Technology, resulting in a final product composed of two distinct layers bonded at the molecular level, each specifically engineered to achieve superior performance characteristics. This innovation has become a central pillar of our sustainability approach.

With Dual-Durometer Technology, we are able to combine two layers with unique properties:

  • The top layer ensures durability and ease of maintenance.
  • The bottom layer provides significant benefits in cushioning and acoustic comfort.

We are the sole company to have developed this technology, setting our flooring apart!

With environmental impact being a top priority, this technology gives us a significant competitive advantage. Recycling of both internal and, eventually, external waste is achievable without compromising product performance.

Thanks to this technology, the base layer allows for the incorporation of a larger amount of recycled materials from various sources into our products.

Extended Glossary

Cradle to Gate

Cradle to Gate (or Phase A1-A3) covers the early phase of a product’s life, accounting for its environmental footprint until it exits the factory. Key considerations include supply chain transport, raw materials, and the energy required for manufacturing.

EPD

An EPD is a standardized report that communicates a product’s potential environmental impacts based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It breaks down the product’s life cycle into multiple stages, each consisting of specific activities that may affect the environment. For example, the Product Stage (manufacturing) highlights the energy required to produce the item. Classified as a Type III declaration under ISO 14025, an EPD provides detailed, quantifiable environmental data, enabling transparent comparisons between products that fulfill similar functions.

GWP

Different greenhouse gases vary in their ability to contribute to global warming, which can make calculations complex. To standardize results, all greenhouse gas emissions are expressed in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2 eq.).

In an EPD (see EPD), the total GWP is reported in kilograms of CO2 eq. Since the life cycle is divided into stages, data can also be analyzed for individual stages. For instance, the Product Stage (A1-A3), or Cradle to Gate, is frequently highlighted because:

  • It encompasses all activities involved in producing and packaging the final product;
  • It generally accounts for the largest share of environmental impacts;
  • It provides a straightforward basis for comparing similar products.

Bio-attributed Rubber

Rubber produced using a large quantity of bio-based oils derived from plants or seeds.

The term “bio-attributed” refers to the use of bio-based feedstock. Fossil fuel-sourced feedstock was replaced by renewable or bio-based feedstock, precisely measured using the mass balance methodology.

What is the mass balance method for bio-attributed materials?

The mass balance method manages the use of biopolymers and other renewable materials. It relies on precise tracking of material flows, allowing bio-based resources to partially substitute fossil-based ones without requiring modifications to processes or facilities. Practically, the amount of renewable material is calculated through accounting and then “attributed” to the finished products.

Information provided on products must be verifiable and certified. To avoid confusion, these materials should be labeled as “bio-attributed renewable products” rather than simply “bio-based products”.
